Fretted Instrument Repairer

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Fretted Instrument Repairer handles all aspects of repair and restoration of stringed instruments including warranty and non-warranty instruments as well as any brand. This position will be located at the repair facility in downtown Nashville, TN.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Major responsibilities of the position are listed below. To perform the job successfully, the individual must be able to execute each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • Review repair log to determine assigned repair orders and manage the repair process on those orders to completion.
  • Read and understand repair instructions on the order.
  • Receives product from production department.
  • Use independent judgment to inspect instrument and pick up on needed repairs that might not be listed in instruction.
  • Perform repair work which includes deconstruction, construction, disassembly, assembly, fret work, finishing, and buffing.
  • Perform instrument setups to return instrument to optimal playing condition.
  • Interact with customer via phone or in-person to inform about repairs being made to instruments.
  • Play instruments to evaluate their sound quality and to locate any defects.
  • Adjust string tensions to tune instruments, using hand tools and electronic tuning devices.
  • Disassemble instruments and parts for repair and adjustment.
  • Inspect instruments to locate defects, and to determine their value or the level of restoration required.
  • Repair cracks in wood or metal instruments, using pinning wire, lathes, fillers, clamps, or soldering irons.
  • Reassemble instruments following repair, using hand tools and power tools and glue, hair, yarn, resin, or clamps, and lubricate instruments as necessary.
  • Compare instrument pitches with tuning tool pitches in order to tune instruments.
  • String instruments, and adjust trusses and bridges of instruments to obtain specified string tensions and heights.
  • Repair or replace musical instrument parts and components, such as strings, bridges, felts, and keys, using hand and power tools.
  • Polish instruments, using rags and polishing compounds, buffing wheels, or burnishing tools.
  • Provide tours of facility as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • H.S. Diploma or GED
  • Previous experience in areas relating to:
  • o Use of tools and machinery
    o Problem solving skills
    o Hand skills
    o Guitar setups
    o Ability to play guitar
