This is a wonderful “hybrid-picking” style that is based on the piano style of the great Fats Domino. In this way, we are playing “time” with our fingers on the higher strings, while the bass notes played by our pick are actually a “walking bass” melody. So what this means is that the pick is actually simulating the right hand of the piano player, and the fingers are emulating the left!
Also explored in this lesson is how we can create an even ”shuffle” pattern with the same “hybrid” picking approach, still emulating the piano. These were all instilled in me by my late, great friend, the one and only Danny Gatton! Enjoy!—Arlen Roth
