Notes in the Fifth Position
Notes in the Fifth Position
Many players are comfortable in the 1st position—they know the notes and can play a few licks. But the farther up the neck they go, the more unfamiliar it becomes, and they’re not too sure which note is which.

Next to the first position, the fifth position is probably the most helpful area of the neck for you to know. It is a very comfortable area of the neck to play, so chances are you are going to be doing a lot of playing in this area of the neck. This lesson covers the notes in the fifth position including sharps and flats.

Practice playing the notes while saying them, ascending and descending. This will help you remember them. Try to play familiar melodies in the fifth position to help you get a feel for the positioning of the notes. It may be difficult in the beginning, but after a few tries, your ear will get better at finding the right notes.
