At Last
Mike Pachelli teaches you to play “At Last” as recorded in 1960, by Etta James. Mack Gordon and Harry Warren wrote the song in 1941 for the film, “Orchestra Wives.” James took a bit of liberty with the original melody and made it her own. Her version was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame back in 1999.

Etta James is noted as the singer that got rock n’ rollers to notice rhythm and blues. Her first break was singing with Johnny Otis (who was the original King of rock n’ roll) who secured the opening spot on tour with Little Richard. A recording contract with Chess Records followed, allowing her to do background vocals on Chuck Berry records.

On her first LP, she recorded jazz standards, blues and doo-wop, but Leonard Chess fancied her as a classic ballad singer. “At Last” was her second recording with a full string section. It became her signature song, even though it only made it to no.47 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Mike plays a Gibson Custom L5-CT in this lesson.

Mike Pachelli
Mike Pachelli started playing guitar as a youngster in his hometown of Youngstown, Ohio. His earliest influence was Wes Montgomery who Mike says, "first opened my ears to the possibilities on guitar." Pachelli studied classical guitar at YSU and then moved to New York City to study bebop with guitar luminaries Joe Pass and Pat Martino. Mike's guitar style is an amalgamation of blues, jazz, rock, and neo-classical. He has a wealth of musical experience gained thru years of night clubs, concert halls, and recording studios. He's performed all over the U.S. and Europe with some of the most eclectic jazz, blues, pop and rock musicians including Brother Jack McDuff, Albert King, Les & Larry Elgart, Michael Sembello, Crystal Gayle, Barbara Mandrell, Jeanne Mas, Phil Keaggy, Frank Stallone (to name a few) and has done classical symphony concerts touring with Ferrante and Teicher.
