Cult of Personality
Adam Stark teaches you how to play “Cult of Personality” by Living Colour.
“Cult of Personality" is the first single from the funk/metal band’s first album, Vivid, released on July 14, 1988. The band’s founder, Vernon Reid, described the song as very special for the band, not just for its commercial success, but because it was essentially written in just one rehearsal session. The signature riff was stumbled upon while practicing and by the end of the session they had written what was to become Living Colour's best-known song.
It had huge success upon its release in 1988, reaching #13 on the Billboard Hot 100, #9 on the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart, winning a Grammy for "Best Hard Rock Performance," and earning two MTV Video Music Awards for “Best Group Video” and “Best New Artist.”
In 2007, the song was re-recorded and released for the video game, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. It also appeared in the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which has sold over 27 million copies worldwide. Unfortunately, the band no longer owns the rights to the original.
Cult of Personality was ranked #69 on VH1's 100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs. The solo was ranked #87 in Guitar World's "100 Greatest Guitar Solos" list.
It features a creative and unique guitar riff that’s reasonably challenging. If you take the time to learn this one, practice it, and perfect it, it will benefit your mechanics, mobility, and coordination all at the same time. If you learn this one, there is no doubt that you’ll have grown as a player.

Adam plays an Gibson Custom Les Paul R7 Goldtop in the lesson.
