Gibson to Celebrate SG’s 50th Anniversary with New Line of Models

In 1961, Gibson was looking to pep up the Les Paul line with a radical new design for the solidbody electric guitar. What they came up with was a thin, double-cutaway design that combined easy access with a fiery sonic output. It was called the “SG” (for “Solid Guitar”), and it would alter the course of popular music history forever in the hands of artists like Pete Townshend, Tony Iommi, Duane Allman, Eric Clapton, Angus Young and a myriad of others.

Epiphone Invades the ESPN NEXT Ranch

Epiphone was proud to be involved, once again, in this year’s ESPN NEXT Pre-Super Bowl Festivities. The event took over the River Ranch in Fort Worth on Friday, February 4 and featured a special performance by Kid Rock, with DJ sets by Rev Run and DJ Ruckus. Handling red carpet V.I.P. tent interviews for the night were Snoop Dogg and Nelly. The event celebrates the magazine’s “Next” issue and showcases what’s “next” in sports, technology, lifestyle, and, of course, what’s “next” from ESPN.

Last year in the U.K., a design contest was held in honor of the 1960 Les Paul Standard’s 50th Anniversary. The winning design, the Maze 1960 Les Paul Standard, was revealed at the NAMM show in January, as was the identity of its designer, contest winner Richard Gregory from Dorset, England.

Guitar god Jeff Beck paid a fitting tribute to Les Paul last summer with a live performance celebrating his friend and mentor’s music. The show took place on what would have been Paul’s 95th birthday at New York City’s Iridium Jazz Club, where the Wizard of Waukesha held a residency for the last 14 years of his life. Sponsored by Gibson Guitar and billed as “A Celebration of Les Paul,” the show featured Beck and The Imelda May Band, as well as guests including Brian Setzer, Gary “U.S.” Bonds and Trombone Shorty.

Every year, the National Association of Music Merchants (or, NAMM) hosts the largest music trade show in America. This year, over the course of the four-day show, more than 85,000 attendees filled the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. At the heart of this event, featuring the latest products and state-of-the-art technology, was Gibson Guitar. And no instrument drew more attention than the groundbreaking Firebird X.

Gibson Guitar was a major force at this year’s record-breaking Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada. The 2011 edition of CES featured the biggest international attendance in the four-day event’s history, and many of the guests were drawn to the display of cutting-edge technology at the Gibson booth — most notably, the groundbreaking new Firebird X guitar. Attendees had the chance to test drive the guitar, as well as attend demos, which highlighted Firebird X’s Robot tuning, onboard effects and Bluetooth capabilities. And they were able to enter a contest to win their very own Firebird X.
