Peter McWhirter, a 19-year-old from Harrington Park, Australia was crowned the 2009 Telstra Road to Tamworth winner last night, after outshining seven other finalists to win a prize package including a trip to Nashville, a full album deal with ABC Music plus an Epiphone Elitist Les Paul. In addition, each of the eight finalists received an Epiphone Epiphone DR-100 Acoustic.
Performing two original songs, “Chasing Girls” and “Not Gunna Happen,” Peter brought down the house with his fresh and energetic stage presence.
Ecstatic to hear his name called as the winner, Peter thanked everyone involved in the competition.
“To be up here on stage, hearing my songs played the way I’ve always dreamed was just an awesome experience,” said McWhirter. “Winning this prize can only mean bigger things ahead for my career.”
Hosted by well-known radio and television presenter Nick Bennett, the Grand Final was held at Tamworth Regional Entertainment and Conference Centre and was webcast live to thousands of country music lovers across Australia and overseas. Former Telstra Road to Tamworth winners Morgan Evans and Jasmine Rae, and National Ambassador Adam Harvey supported the eight grand finalists at the sold-out event.
Now in its sixth year of operation, the Telstra Road to Tamworth program continues to catapult aspiring Australian musicians into the international music spotlight.
