As the temperatures begin to boil and the always highly anticipated summer touring season is in full swing, a unique star is a key player both in the studio and on the summer tour roster, sharing stages with some of music’s hottest acts across every genre. Baldwin Piano is the unsuspected star providing the keys of summer for all types of audiences alongside some of the most accomplished musical acts.
Showcased in a smash-hit performance on music’s biggest night of the year at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards, alongside Elton John and Lady Gaga, was a custom Baldwin Piano. Designed specifically for the night, the piano made for what was not only one of the most aesthetically edgy looks of the evening, but also showcased the sound of two of music’s biggest pop acts from two very different generations, demonstrating the range and versatility of Baldwin. That performance set the tone for what is a whirlwind summer tour season, during which Baldwin is treating audiences around the world with the keys of summer as the piano of choice for a varied group of acts from Evanescence’s Amy Lee, Guns N’ Roses’ Axl Rose, singer-songwriter Ben Folds, young piano phenomenon Ethan Bortnick, the legendary Jerry Lee Lewis, pop superstars the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus, and many others.
In a recording studio, Amy Lee uses her trusted Baldwin Piano to create the sounds she is describing as “synthetic and atmospheric” for Evanescence’s as-yet-untitled, first release since 2006, due out later this year. Jerry Lee Lewis has done the same for his recently announced all-star-packed album Mean Old Man, due out September 7th. The Killer will be playing a custom Baldwin Piano as he promotes the new album on national television appearances throughout late summer.
Miley Cyrus has paired her pop vocals with the sounds of a Baldwin in the studio for her recent hit release, Can’t Be Tamed, which also features Gibson guitars; as will The Jonas Brothers, who also enhance their pop-rock vocals with both of these premiere instruments, when they hit the road in August for a cross-country U.S. tour. In a unique collaboration between two writers, Ben Folds has used a Baldwin in the studio to add music to Nick Hornby’s forthcoming album, Lonely Avenue, due out September 28th from Nonesuch Records. Nine-year-old piano sensation Ethan Bortnick will be hitting the road in October but, before then, can be seen playing his Baldwin piano on a PBS television special set to air in August. Axl Rose sat down with an exclusive purple Baldwin grand to compose music for an upcoming release, as well.
Baldwin Piano has been an influential player in the music scene for over a century and is consistently offering artists and fans creative and innovative pianos. Baldwin was acquired by prestigious guitar and musician instrument manufacturer Gibson Guitar Corp. in 2001 and brought the two American Icon companies under the leadership of the company’s chairman and CEO, Henry Juszkiewicz. With the aggressive vision that brought Gibson back to the top of the guitar industry, Juszkiewicz quickly applied new thinking to the century-old Baldwin. One early step was to introduce the Baldwin Custom Design Studio program; a “whatever you want” custom shop, offering everything from custom carvings and engravings, painted murals, special materials and finish colors – even a “Liberace style” jeweled treatment.
More recently, Baldwin has unveiled a collection of sought-after pianos, including the Concert Master Player System with a contemporary design cabinet and light effects. Baldwin Piano recently exhibited at the SINO-CES show in China where consumers and dealers gave rave reviews to several models on display. Two new vertical models were displayed incorporating Baldwin’s own light enhancement system. Other highlights from the SINO-CES show included an 8-color LED light strip that can be set to stationary light or fading selections, flash-mount soft-touch button control panel and motorized lid opener. Legendary musician Jerry Lee Lewis took a delivery of his new Baldwin Piano this week and will be making several key national media appearances in support of his new CD release with his favorite Baldwin piano.
