Who: Rami Jaffee
Story: Grammy-winning producer and musician Rami Jaffee got his start playing keys with the Wallflowers, and since then, he’s lent his keyboard talents to everyone from Foo Fighters to Pearl Jam to Pete Yorn.
Rig: Jaffee’s Los Angeles studio, Fonogenic Studios, features a full Cerwin-Vega! Active Series speaker system .
Why he loves it: “My favorite monitors have got to be punchy and bright. The Cerwin-Vega give me complete happiness,” he told Cerwin-Vega!. He added that the speakers couldn’t be more perfect. “These speakers need to sound great so as not to adversely affect the tonality of the vocals on the recording. I was extremely happy the way the CVs filled the room. They proved to be a perfect match for the space!”
Who: The Dirty Pearls
Story: The Dirty Pearls make glam rock not unlike the New York Dolls or David Bowie. The New York City-based band formed in 2010, and their debut album, “Whether You Like It or Not,” is available now.
Rig: The guys use the Cerwin-Vega!’s P-Series professional PA system with two active speaker products: the P1500X and the P1800SX.
Why they love it: “As a rock band, we’re used to playing with sub-par stage monitoring—it comes with the territory,” guitarist Tommy Mokas told Cerwin-Vega!. “But when you step on stage and the speakers are powerful and present, they allow you to perform in a much more effortless fashion, very much like a good instrument will. The P-Series monitors are strong and crisp, without the ‘mush’ that makes you uncomfortable.”
Who: Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins
Story: Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins is one of the industry’s leading producers, toting work with Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Alicia Keys, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce and more. In 1999, Jerkins scored a Grammy with Destiny’s Child for “Say My Name.”
Rig: Jerkins and his team rely on their Cerwin-Vega! Active Series speaker system for his Darkchild Entertainment studios in Los Angeles.
Why he loves it: “When I’m creating, I like it really loud, overly loud,” he told Cerwin Vega! . “I always try to tweak or figure out how we can make the music sound better. The live sound speakers give me the opportunity to listen to how this might be sounding in a club atmosphere. That’s really what they’re there for.”
Who: Lalah Hathaway, often called the “First Daughter of Soul,” is the daughter of the late Donny Hathaway, one of the most celebrated American soul vocalists of all time. Hathaway’s music stands on its own, and she has recorded six albums since 1990.
Rig: Hathaway ops for the Cerwin-Vega! XD3 two-way powered desktop speakers, which she uses at home.
Why she loves it: “I listen to music at some point every day in the downstairs area of my home and these have become my go-to speakers,” Hathaway told Cerwin-Vega!. “I love that I can easily move them from room to room instead of having to put a whole system in the house. Whether I’m listening to music on my mini disc player, iPad or iPod, since they’re powered and I don’t need an amp, I can just plug the XD3s in and listen. I have many pairs for just that reason.”
Who: Mexican alternative/psychedelic band Zoé boast a résumé filled with gold and platinum certified recordings and awards. The guys rock a unique mix of Britpop and grunge—a sound captured on the band’s 2011 release, Mú sica de Fondo/MTV Unplugged.
Rig: Zoé use a Cerwin-Vega! Active Series speaker system , consisting of four full-range CVA-28 tops and two CVA 121 subwoofers, in their rehearsal studio room.
Why they love it: “We are constantly on the road these days, so creative time spent in our rehearsal/recording studio is extremely valuable to fine tune our performances,” Sergio Acosta, lead guitarist for Zoé, told Cerwin-Vega!. “As we have the speakers set up across the room facing the band, the Cerwin-Vega! system gives us the opportunity to hear ourselves in the same manner as a FOH system. We use them for when we are rehearsing, composing or just jamming. We even use them to listen to other music as a form of sonic research. We can do this because the system is very accurate. We believe that having this type of setup helps both our creative process and performances. Cerwin-Vega! delivers the sound we need.”
