Starting June 6, there is nearly a month of events taking place to celebrate the genius of Les Paul, 99 years after the guitar legend was born on June 9, 1915.

On June 9, the Iridium club, New York, will feature Joe Satriani performing in honor of Les Paul’s birthday. The performance will be filmed for later showing on PBS. In a 2009 interview Satriani said of Les, “We’re talking about pure musicianship, pure music flowing through his veins.”

Waukesha Guitar Town events, in Les Paul’s hometown, start June 6. The Les Paul Trio and Earl Slick will play. This year’s Guitar Town program distributed Gibson guitars suitable for painting to all public schools in Waukesha. Gibson Brands also supplied 30 guitars to the Waukesha school district for students taking newly-introduced guitar lessons in the high schools.

Hearing Education & Awareness for Rockers (H.E.A.R.) of San Francisco, is releasing its enhanced Listen Smart film in conjunction with Les Paul’s 99th birthday.

The Stax Music Academy in Memphis has challenged students to learn about Les Paul as they formed bands in recent months. Winning bands will record their music at House of Blues Studios, Memphis, and will perform during the Stax Music Academy Grand Finale Concert in Memphis on June 29.
