Deftones Releases Eros Track to Honor Chi
Deftones have released a song titled “Smile” from their album Eros to mark the first anniversary of the passing of their bass player, Chi Cheng, who died of a cardiac arrest after being in a semi-comatose state since a 2008 car accident.
Eros was recorded in 2008, but the band shelved the album with only six tracks fully completed (vocals were still being tracked) following Cheng’s accident.
The band had played the song “Melanie” at live performances at the time, but fans have long hoped to hear something from the album.
Last year, a month after Cheng’s death, vocalist Chino Moreno said he’d recently listened to the album again and felt the time was nearing to release the album, later clarifying that the band would likely release one more album before putting Eros out. “I think it should be released, but we don't have any definite plans,” he told MTV. “There's some work to do on it. Deftones have been moving forward in a strong, positive motion, so for us to stop and reflect on something five years ago, I don't know if we're ready for that,” adding, “It is a special thing for us: it's the last thing Chi played on. It will see the light of day. I just don't know when.”
