Dream Theater are streaming their softer side in a brand new song called “Along for the Ride.” The excerpt is from forthcoming their album self-titled album, out on September 24.
Guitarist John Petrucci says, “This is the first self-titled album of our career and there is nothing I can think of that makes a statement of musical and creative identity stronger than that. We’ve fully explored all of the elements that make us unique, from the epic and intense to the atmospheric and cinematic. We’re incredibly excited about Dream Theater and can’t wait for everyone to hear it."
Petrucci also commented that the new album’s “ace in the hole” was drummer Mike Mangini.
Meanwhile, former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy says he’s given up on speaking about the band. In an interview with Modern Drummer, Portnoy said the band’s loyal fan base often react strongly to his comments:
“I feel bad that I can’t talk openly about Dream Theater any more without being torn to shreds,” Portnoy said. “I wish I could without there being a backlash – but it’s become the reality that I’ve accepted. I feel it’s a no-win situation.”
In the same interview, Portnoy admits: “When I heard the new material it simply wasn’t my cup of tea. It's great – but I couldn’t relate to it any more. People change, where it be as a listener or as an artist.”
