Gibson Debut New ES-390

The ingenious redesign follows the form of the seminal ES-330 – it’s a fully hollow archtop electric with a thinline body depth like that of the semi-acoustic ES-335. But it’s different from either, as the ES-390 uses the compacted dimensions of the popular ES-339, making it a more comfortable playing proposition for those used to having smaller-proportioned solidbodies in their hands.

The ES-390 is a more compact version of the original 330s of the 1960s with a fully hollow body made from laminated maple/basswood/maple with traditional f-holes. The result is a dynamic blend of the traditional archtop’s looks and sonic depth with amazing overall playing comfort. The neck is crafted from solid mahogany, and topped with a bound fingerboard made from hand-selected dark rosewood, inlaid with simple but elegant block markers.

New for 2014 are two MHS P-90 (Memphis Historic Spec) pickups and a Vintage Dark Burst finish (aged) for a classic Gibson look.

U.K. singer-songwriter star Jake Bugg was a fan of the ES-390 from the off. In 2013, he recalled, “I just got a Gibson ES-390 electric guitar. I went to Memphis and I went to the little Gibson factory and had a tour. The guy was holding up pieces of wood and saying, 'That's going to sound amazing?' I mean, how can you tell that? He could just tell.

“And then upstairs they had all these beautiful guitars they had made, ones they picked out for their showroom. I picked up this little red one and thought, 'Wow, that's amazing.' And then I put it down but I picked it back up again because it was amazing.”
