The first of five limited edition Artist in Residence guitars has been sold in Australia for a sizeable but undisclosed sum.
The five Artist in Residence guitars were built by the Gibson Custom Crimson team under the direction of artist James A. Willis. Based on the original the New York City Special that Gibson Custom unveiled earlier this year, these 5 limited edition pieces are the first commercially available artwork from Gibson’s Artist in Residence program.
Each of the 5 Les Paul guitars is an original work of art, hand painted by James and finished by Gibson’s finest luthiers. The guitars are all different and reflect the artist’s original interpretation of a Manhattan skyline, expressed in copper, copper leaf and acrylic.
All these guitars mark a significant milestone in Gibson Custom’s Artist in Residence program, the first-of-its-kind foray into fine art by one of the world’s most storied instrument makers.
Available through authorized Gibson Custom dealers worldwide, four more of these stunning guitars are now available. Each comes with a certificate of authenticity hand-signed by the artist, as well as a hard shell, Gibson Custom case.
James A. Willis, the program’s inaugural artist, has been profiled in American Art Collector, Arts & Antiques and RefuelMagazine.com, among others, and is currently the recipient of a studio space endowment from CHASAMA, a non-profit arts organization based in New York City.
