Johnny A.’s style passes the test of time, and it’s not by accident. With influences from the likes of the Beatles, Everly Brothers, Wes Montgomery, Chet Atkins and Jeff Beck, it’s easy to see why Johnny A.’s music is considered timeless, and his guitar playing recognized as one of the most innovative and expressive of our time.
After years of paying his dues on the local New England club circuit and honing his guitar skills by playing every style under the sun, Johnny A. found success in two notable Boston-based bands, The Streets and Hearts on Fire. He eventually branched out and began working with former Derek and the Dominos keyboardist Bobby Whitlock, before hooking up with legendary J. Geils Band frontman Peter Wolf and spending the next seven years as Wolf’s lead guitarist and co-producer, traveling the world and building his reputation as one of the greatest guitar talents in the world.
Since his time with Wolf, Johnny A. has spent the new millennium developing his uniquely melodic and texture-filled style, gaining the notoriety of his peers, and building an ever-increasing fan base with his first all-instrumental guitar album, Sometime Tuesday Morning, and the hugely successful follow-up, Get Inside, while continuing to share the stage with the likes of B.B. King, Robert Cray, Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton.
Gibson Custom first introduced the Johnny A. Signature Model in 2003, and it’s become one of the company’s most successful and popular models. Developed in close collaboration with Johnny A., the Johnny A. Signature Model combines several innovative design aspects with many of Gibson’s traditional appointments to deliver one of the world’s most unique guitars.
Body and Neck
The Johnny A. Signature Model’s completely hollow body, available exclusively in the Sunset Glow finish, features contoured outer surfaces with a flat inner back, which results in less feedback with a bright, snappy response. The body features a hand-carved, beautifully figured maple top, with back and sides carved from one solid piece of mahogany, then adorned with multi-ply white and black binding. The 25½-inch scale neck features a custom-designed rounded neck profile tailored to Johnny A.’s personal specs, topped with a 22-fret ebony fingerboard with custom-designed pearl inlays. The bound headstock also features a custom-designed pearl inlay, vintage tulip tuners and Gibson’s iconic logo at the top.
A pair of Gibson’s legendary ’57 Classic pickups deliver all the warm, full tone and balanced response expected from a Gibson humbucker. Other standard appointments include a Bigsby tremolo system (also available with an ABR-1 bridge and stopbar tailpiece) and all gold hardware. The Johnny A. Signature Model from Gibson Custom comes with the standard Gibson Custom case and certificate of authenticity.
