Gibson USA 490R (rhythm) and 498T (treble) humbucking pickups. The 490R is made with an Alnico II magnet for plenty of smooth vocal tones in the neck position. The Gibson 498T bridge pickup is the 490's ideal complement. Taking the design one step further, the 498T swaps the Alnico II magnet to an Alnico V, thus making it slightly hotter with emphasis on mid-ranges and highs. The pole pieces on the 498T are also aligned a little further apart to accommodate the spacing of the strings at the bridge, which is different than the spacing of the strings at the neck.
Magnet Material
The 490R uses Alnico II, the 498T Alnico V.
Tonal Characteristics
In the bridge (lead) position, the 498T offers a bright, cutting tones through clean amps and more midrange snarl and bite through overdriven amps, with plenty of muscle and sustain. In the neck position, the 490R presents the optimum blend of warmth, depth, and clarity, a tone that is equally suited to blues, jazz, and sweeter, mellower pop and rock styles.
Electronics
Volume Controls
The Les Paul Supreme uses an independent Volume control for each pickup. These consist of quality 300k linear potentiometers for a smooth, natural roll-off.
Tone Control
The guitar's two independent Tone controls consist of quality 500k non-linear potentiometers, each with a .022mF tone capacitor for a broad, usable range from these controls.
Toggle Switch
The Les Paul Supreme features the classic three-way Switchcraft toggle switch with cream plastic tip.
Output Jack
The guitar features a 1⁄4" output jack made by Switchcraft, for years of trouble-free service.
