Body
Species
Each Sammy Hagar Red Rocker Les Paul is made from a figured two-piece maple top attached with ultra-strong Franklin Titebond 50 glue to a solid, two-piece, weight-relieved mahogany body. This legendary wood combination, originally used in the first Les Paul of 1952, is one of the most revered pairings in the history of the solid and semi-solid electric guitar, and yields a “best of both worlds” tonal splendor, while also producing a classic look and a sturdy instrument.
Tonal Characteristics
Like any of the finest Les Pauls, the Sammy Hagar Red Rocker Les Paul’s body woods present the classic combination of good clarity, definition and treble bite from the maple, and excellent depth and richness from the mahogany, all of which are elements that are found in the legendary tone of the original Les Paul Standard. In addition, the chambered mahogany body adds a certain spacious quality to the guitar’s midrange, in addition to a certain acoustic airiness that enhances its overall sonic complexity.
Design
The Sammy Hagar Red Rocker Les Paul precisely follows the body lines and dimensions of the original Les Paul Standard, with a gently arched carved top and rounded lower bout, and combines the classic tonewood combination of mahogany back and carved maple top. The body’s back is cut from a two-piece mahogany blank which is “chambered” with the addition of nine strategically placed holes, a process designed to add acoustic resonance while reducing weight. The back is then capped with a two-piece top of figured maple that is carved into a gentle arch.
Weight
Weights vary slightly according to wood stocks, but the Sammy Hagar Red Rocker Les Paul falls within the range of traditional weights for Gibson Les Pauls.
Finish
Color
The Sammy Hagar Red Rocker Les Pauls is finished in Gibson’s translucent Cabernet, a rich, luscious, multi-dimensional hue, with translucent cherry back, sides, and neck.
Process
The Sammy Hagar Red Rocker Les Paul is hand-finished in nitrocellulose lacquer in a process that closely replicates the finishing process applied to original Les Paul Standards of the ’50s. It is finished with minimum build-up, in an effort to produce a finish that breathes with the guitar and enhances natural resonance, and which will age elegantly and naturally over years of use.
Surface Texture
Just as original Sunburst Les Pauls were finished more than 50 years ago, the Sammy Hagar Red Rocker Les Paul is given a striking, well-buffed, nitro-gloss finish with a high sheen factor of 90.
