Georgia On My Mind
Mike Pachelli takes a look at “Georgia On My Mind,“ written in 1930 by Hoagy Carmichael, but most often associated with Ray Charles. Ray recorded it in 1960 for his album, The Genius Hits The Road, and the song became a major hit.
Ray Charles had an illustrious recording career that spanned from 1949 to 2004. During those 55 years, he recorded blues, jazz, gospel, soul, rock, & country western. But if you ask anybody to name a Ray Charles record, they’d more than likely say “Georgia On My Mind.”
The original recording is rather complex, due largely to the lush string arrangement and production prowess of Sid Feller. It has some wonderful chord voicing’s and harmonic moves. The song has evolved through the years into a standard, and there are countless variations on its chord structure. In this lesson, the focus will stay close to the original 1960 version, while making concessions only when necessary to facilitate the guitar.

Mike plays a Gibson Custom ES-175 in this lesson.

Mike Pachelli
Mike Pachelli started playing guitar as a youngster in his hometown of Youngstown, Ohio. His earliest influence was Wes Montgomery who Mike says, "first opened my ears to the possibilities on guitar." Pachelli studied classical guitar at YSU and then moved to New York City to study bebop with guitar luminaries Joe Pass and Pat Martino. Mike's guitar style is an amalgamation of blues, jazz, rock, and neo-classical. He has a wealth of musical experience gained thru years of night clubs, concert halls, and recording studios. He's performed all over the U.S. and Europe with some of the most eclectic jazz, blues, pop and rock musicians including Brother Jack McDuff, Albert King, Les & Larry Elgart, Michael Sembello, Crystal Gayle, Barbara Mandrell, Jeanne Mas, Phil Keaggy, Frank Stallone (to name a few) and has done classical symphony concerts touring with Ferrante and Teicher.
