Mama Told Me (Not to Come)
Brandon Trapp, lead guitarist for Backwood Boulevard, shows you a classic song from Three Dog Night called “Mama Told Me (Not To Come).” This tune was written by Randy Newman and was originally recorded by Eric Burdon and The Animals in 1966. In 1970, both Newman and Three Dog Night released their versions. The Three Dog Night single reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
The song is written about the 60’s music scene from the perspective of a straight-laced guy who’s attending his first wild party. He’s appalled by everything he sees and remembers that his “mama told him not to come.”
This song gets you thinking outside the box as a guitarist. The main hook is actually a keyboard, but in this lesson, you'll learn how to emulate it on guitar. You’ll be employing lots of effects and some imagination. It also has a pretty tricky little guitar solo that requires you to learn some nice new licks.

Brandon plays a Gibson Custom ES-335 Block Inlay in this lesson.
