Home Theater System — What Setup is Best For You?
If you’re thinking about getting a home theater system, there are a number of things to consider in order to get the setup that works best for you. Of course, a decent size television or a projector is important to get that movie theater feeling in your living room. Equally as important as the picture is the sound.
Today there are some impressive basic sound systems available that won’t break the bank. If your setup simply consist of a flat-screen monitor connected to your computer, you can still enhance the experience by adding a small 2.1 channel home theater system with a subwoofer. One such setup to consider is the HTX-22HDX Ultra-Compact HD Home Theater System from Onkyo. The subwoofer double as an A/V receiver with three HDMI 1.4a connections that are capable of handling HD formats from DTS and Dolby, as well as 3D video.
If your living quarters are cramped you might want to consider a setup consisting of a soundbar and a subwoofer. A soundbar is designed to be mounted below the TV, taking up minimal space. You might be surprised at the massive sound you can get from a soundbar, and combined with a subwoofer it delivers real depth to the sound. Onkyo offer the LS-B50 EnvisionCinema Soundbar System which consist of a powerful soundbar and subwoofer. The fact that the subwoofer is wireless makes placement of the unit a breeze. Here’s what Onkyo has to say about their product: “AuraSphere digital signal processing works with a six-channel amplifier, powerful wireless subwoofer, and eight-driver speaker array to seamlessly replace TV audio with rich and enveloping 3D sound. There are three sound modes to optimize movies, dialog, or music, and Bluetooth technology for wireless playback of almost any audio source sent from smartphone, tablet, and PC.”
For the serious audio-phile there’s really only one way to go, with a 7.1 channel sound system. Onkyo has created the HT-S9400THX which is a THX® Certified 7.1-Ch Network Home Theater Receiver/Speaker Package. What you get is a state of the art seven speaker system with excellent mid-range clarity, and a subwoofer capable of handling the low-end for the most intense action movies. Just like the HTX-22HDX the system is 3D ready, and support both Dolby and DTS formats. Even though the focus might be on making movies sound great, the HT-S9400THX also come with a USB input that allow the user to connect an iPhone and enjoy their music collection through this superb audio system. Through an app, the user is also able to use their iPhone or iPod as a remote for the HT-S9400THX.
Once you’ve decided on what home theater system is best for you, there’s one more thing to consider - the media player. Basically, the only two formats to consider these days is DVD and Blu-ray. When it comes to DVD’s, you might want to take a look at Onkyo’s DV-CP706 DVD player. One of the biggest selling points for this product is its 6-disc ability, and the fact that it can upscale a standard DVD to 1080p high-definition resolution. If you’re like me, chances are you’ve already amassed quite a DVD collection by the time the Blu-ray format was introduced. So now that you’re stuck with a movie collection that is split between two different formats you need a media player that can handle both Blu-ray and DVD. One such device is Onkyo’s BD-SP809. Not only can it handle both Blu-ray and DVD, but the twin HDMI outputs allow you to switch between two output sources. For example, you might have a TV for day-to-day viewing, and a projector for movies and live concerts.
These are just some suggestions meant as a starting point if you’re looking to upgrade your audio setup. Be sure to head over to Onkyo and check out all the products they have to offer, and find the system that suits your needs.
