Dave Grohl on Making Soundgarden Video

Daniel Eriksson

Foo Fighter Dave Grohl has explained to Fuse how he came to direct the video for Soundgarden's song “By Crooked Steps” (via Classic Rock): “I was on vacation and they sent me their new record. I was such a huge fan, way before I moved to Seattle. The third song is called ‘By Crooked Steps’ and it’s such an awesome Soundgarden song. Instantly recognizable.”

“I didn’t know if it was going to be a single or if they wanted to make a video or what. I called my manager and said, 'I think I’ve got an idea for a Soundgarden video.'”

Grohl ended up sending his concept of the video, which feature Soundgarden as a biker gang, but instead of motorcycles they're on Segways, to the band's drummer Matt Cameron. Says Grohl about Cameron's response: “He said, ‘Yeah, that’s kinda cool – I don’t really know if we’re going to make a video.’ And so we kinda made them make the video.”
