Eric Church’s latest album, The Outsiders, is No. 1 on the Billboard 200 this week, and it wasn’t close. The album pushed 288,000 copies in its debut week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That’s the top sales week of 2014 and the largest since Beyonce’s self-titled album moved 310,000 copies in a single week last December.
Church’s previous studio album, 2011’s Chief, also came in at No. 1 its debut week out, selling 145,000 copies.
Head to an Eric Church show, and you’ll notice his entire band plays Gibson guitars. According to Church, the Gibson clean sweep is purely coincidence.
“We all came from different areas, and those guys have been playing forever, and that’s what they’ve always played!” Church told Gibson.com.
“It’s funny, when we first started playing together, we looked around and thought it was funny that we all played Gibsons,” he added. “It turned out being a good thing with Gibson, too, and I’m glad we all played Gibsons already. I would never want to play something I didn’t want to play. It had to do with the fact we liked to play this thing.”
