GWAR frontman David Brockie, known by his stage name of Oderus Urungus, passed away of an accidental overdose of heroin.
“The cause of death was acute heroin toxicity, which means the manner of death was accidental,” Arkuie Williams, spokesman for Richmond's chief medical examiner, told the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
The Richmond Police Department reports Brockie, 50, was discovered dead in his home on March 23. The cause of death was uncertain at the time, although authorities did not suspect foul play.
Since 1984, GWAR has developed a cult-following with its scifi-like costumes, bloody onstage activities and ripping thrash metal music. Brockie founded GWAR and was the band’s only consistent member.
Former GWAR guitarist Corey Smoot, known as Flattus Maximus, was found dead on the group’s tour bus in November of 2011. He passed away from complications with coronary artery disease.
A public memorial for Brockie will be held in Richmond, Va., on Aug. 15.
