Titled King of the Sidemen, the film chronicles Wachtel’s experiences backing such major artists as Warren Zevon, Jackson Browne and (most notably) Keith Richards. Richards is among those who appear in the documentary.
“He is a natural maestro," says Richards, who recruited Wachtel to be in his solo band, the X-Pensive Winos. "He can take a song to further heights than you expected, beyond expectations. I envy him, quite honestly."
Stories of key sessions are included in the film, including the one that produced “Take It So Hard,” a classic track from Richards’ 1988 album, Talk is Cheap.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Wachtel said the song was the first the band ever cut. “The level of musicianship in that band was really about as high as it gets," he reveals. "It was take one and we were all standing there going, 'Oh, my God, that was pretty amazing.' I don’t even know if we really rehearsed.”
