Today would have been Kurt Cobain’s 47th birthday.

Nirvana’s lead singer and artistic force was born on February 20, 1967, and earned major stardom as the poster boy for grunge rock, going to the top of the charts with 1991’s Nevermind.

Despite his inherent talent and drive, Cobain was tormented. He eventually committed suicide and was found dead at his Seattle home on April 5, 1994.

Twenty years later, Nirvana’s legacy lives on. At this year’s Grammy awards, Nirvana’s surviving members – bass player Krist Novoselic, drummer Dave Grohl and touring guitarist Pat Smear – picked up the Best Rock Song Grammy for “Cut Me Some Slack,” which featured Paul McCartney on vocals. Coming up on April 10, Nirvana will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The city of Aberdeen, Wash., is celebrating Cobain's birthday by proclaiming today Kurt Cobain Day in the city. Aberdeen is on the Washington coast roughly 80 miles southwest of Seattle.
