The Sun Records legend passed away today at his home in Nashville. The Tennessean reports that he had been suffering from liver cancer.

A genuine renaissance man, Clement was a marine and a dance instructor, a movie producer and a songwriter. But he’s probably best known as producer and engineer at Sun records in its glory days. Clements production credits include first albums for Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash and later in his career, U2’s Rattle and Hum.

Clement will be officially inducted into the Country Music hall of Fame later this year.
