Legendary alt-rockers The Replacements are set to return to the stage for the first time in more than two decades. Core members Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson will headline Riot Fest in three locales – Chicago, Toronto and Denver – beginning in late August. The rest of the band’s lineup will be announced at a later date; word is original drummer Chris Mars is not participating.
Last fall, Westerberg and Stinson reconvened for a covers EP, Songs for Slim, to raise money for former Replacements guitarist Slim Dunlap, who suffered a stroke earlier that year. “After two or three hours my voice was shot, but we were rocking like murder for a while," Westerberg told Rolling Stone, about the sessions.
The Replacements never officially broke up, but the last time they took the stage was in 1991, at Chicago’s Grant Park. The Toronto Riot Fest will take place August 24-25 at Fort York, with the Chicago festival slated for September 13-15 in Humboldt Park. The Denver Riot Fest is set for September 21-22 at May Farms. Full listings and ticket information are available at the Riot Fest website.
