Boy if you don’t know the Detroit Cobras, you are missing out. The Michigan garage soul heartbreakers, led by the great Rachel Nagy—who sings like a white punk Irma Thomas (her take on “Cry On” will make ya)—have been putting out a string of great albums, from the early, ragged Mink Rat or Rabbit to the great Life, Love And Leaving and the recent Tied & True. Who knows how they manage to pay earnest tribute to Otis Redding and the Ramones at the same time, but see for yourself as they rip through “Shout Bama Lama” at a club down in Tampa, Florida. Check out guitarist Mary Ramirez pulverizing the Melody Maker reissue that Gibson put out a few years ago, the ones with the P-90 and the Tune-o-matic.
