J-200 M Trophy 75th Anniversary
The latest installment of Gibson Acoustic’s Five Star Series celebrates the 75th Anniversary of the legendary “King of the Flat-Tops,” the J-200. First introduced in 1937 for famed Hollywood star Ray Whitley, the J-200 (also known as SJ-200) became the ultimate badge of honor for performers on the Grand Ole Opry stage and silver screen. With its iconic shape and bold voice, the J-200 easily crossed over into rock ’n’ roll, becoming the first choice of performers such as Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash, and later Pete Townshend, Bob Dylan and The Edge. The J-200 is arguably the most famous acoustic guitar in the history of rock ’n’ roll. This exclusive and limited-edition J-200 M Trophy 75th Anniversary combines the iconic rounded lines of the original J-200 in the more compact dimensions of Gibson’s J-165. Handcrafted by the acclaimed luthiers of Gibson’s acoustic facility in Bozeman, Montana, using premium tonewoods and “showcase” appointments, the J-200 M Trophy 75th Anniversary will be limited to only 75 guitars and supplied exclusively to Gibson Acoustic’s Five Star dealerships. These dealers are the experts in their field. All have a trained and certified Gibson Acoustic specialist on their sales staff enabling them to provide the finest service to players and collectors seeking premium Gibson acoustic guitars.
In keeping with the status of Gibson’s exclusive Five Star offerings, the J-200 M Trophy 75th Anniversary is crafted from the finest, hand-selected traditional tonewoods for an exotic appearance and an exquisite voice. The top is made from solid premium sitka spruce, while the back and sides are crafted from solid quilted maple that displays a gorgeous, three-dimensional figuring beneath the guitar’s hand-sprayed Antique Natural or Vintage Sunburst nitrocellulose finish. The top, built for maximum resonance with scalloped X-bracing in Gibson’s signature pattern, is finished with a multi-ply binding and double-ring rosette with abalone inlay. The neck is the traditional two-piece maple construction of the J-200 and J-165, with a rosewood stringer that produces the distinctive dark center stripe. Each neck is carved to a rounded “D” profile and topped with a bound rosewood fingerboard inlaid with abalone crowns to match the abalone Gibson logo and crown inlay on the bound headstock. A 24.75” scale length and 1.725” width at the genuine bone nut contribute to that unrivaled Gibson feel so the J-200 M Trophy 75th Anniversary plays every bit as beautifully as it looks.
Further deluxe appointments on the J-200 M Trophy 75th Anniversary include a traditional, engraved J-200 tortoise pickguard, an engraved 75th Anniversary truss-rod cover, and a traditional rosewood Moustache® bridge with two abalone bar inlays. Gold-plated, vintage-style Gotoh tuners with pearloid tulip buttons further enhance the appointments on this fine guitar.
The J-200 M Trophy 75th Anniversary isn’t just for your showcase though. It comes equipped with an L.R. Baggs™ Element® active pickup system so you can take its majestic acoustic tone straight to the concert stage and crank it up through your choice of acoustic guitar amplifier or PA system. All in all, the J-200 M Trophy 75th Anniversary is an exalted celebration of the 75th Anniversary of Gibson’s legendary “King of the Flat-Tops,” and perfect for the 21st century player and collector alike.
